![]() ![]() The central question, if I may practice my still unfluent moral philosophyspeak for a moment, concerns the relationship between the Right and the Good, and how they should inform our choice of social structures: in particular, which of the two should take precedence. It took me a while to understand what this famous book was about - I am still far from up to speed with moral philosophy - but once I'd figured out where Rawls was heading it made good sense and was very illuminating. Rawls received both the Schock Prize for Logic and Philosophy and the National Humanities Medal in 1999, the latter presented by President Bill Clinton, in recognition of how Rawls's thought "helped a whole generation of learned Americans revive their faith in democracy itself." His magnum opus A Theory of Justice (1971) is now regarded as "one of the primary texts in political philosophy." His work in political philosophy, dubbed Rawlsianism, takes as its starting point the argument that "most reasonable principles of justice are those everyone would accept and agree to from a fair position." Rawls employs a number of thought experiments-including the famous veil of ignorance-to determine what constitutes a fair agreement in which "everyone is impartially situated as equals," in order to determine principles of social justice. He held the James Bryant Conant University Professorship at Harvard. ![]() John Bordley Rawls was an American philosopher and a leading figure in moral and political philosophy. ![]()

![]() ![]() In fact, some people travel from across Japan just to try it. Trying the local delicacy ‘sanuki udon’ is a must for anyone visiting Kagawa. Part of the fun of your visit will be wandering around the city and imagining buildings that could have been Sakura’s apartment or Hoshino and Nakata’s private getaway. However, not too many specific neighborhoods or landmarks are mentioned aside from the station and the bridge. Within Kagawa, much of the action takes place in the prefectural capital of Takamatsu. The island of Shikoku consists of 4 prefectures but a large majority of the novel takes place in Kagawa, the smallest prefecture not just of Shikoku but of the entire country. ![]() In recent years, more and more foreign travelers have been taking an interest in Shikoku, hoping to catch a glimpse of “old Japan.” KAGAWA PREFECTURE DAY TOUR 1: TAKAMATSU To this day, Shikoku still lacks a bullet train route, but this is part of what gives the island its charm. The island now has three large bridges linking it to Honshu, but until just a couple of decades ago Shikoku was only accessible by boat or plane. Shikoku is the smallest of Japan’s four main islands and it’s also the least developed. Murakami’s 2002 novel Kafka on the Shore takes us from Tokyo to the island of Shikoku, as we follow the journeys of 15-year-old runaway Kafka Tamura and the odd couple of Nakata and Hoshino. ![]() ![]() Andre prefers the ocean to land, but Sophie hasn’t been looking very healthy, and he’s worried about her, so he agrees to her request. The story starts with Sophie suggesting to her pirate captain husband, Andre Dubois, that they should spend Christmas in New Orleans, instead of shipboard. By moving the apostrophe, we now had a perfect title. Oh, we struggled, trying to make punctuation visually appealing! At last, my publisher-in-chief came up with the simple, impressive idea to tweak the title into: The Pirate Bride’s Holiday Masquerade. We came up with The Pirate’s Bride: A Holiday Masquerade, but didn’t like the look of the colon on the cover. The original title, A Pirate’s Bride Christmas, didn’t address the masks on the cover, or the ball where all the action of the story takes place. It just looked rich, with that deep red color, and the two masks implied romance. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She enjoys gin, British men that have dark hair, gin, the color black, and big earrings. And to a young innocent living in Vienna, the city is a most magical place with little darkness. This was written for children, and clearly from the point of view of a young girl. This was, of course, not quite like your adult novels. So when I read that you had written a young adult novel set in pre-WWI Vienna, I promptly ordered it, and upon receiving it, promptly devoured it. Your books set in Vienna are some of my favorites, because the city through your eyes becomes a place on par with Faery, with enchantments of color and taste and music to be found around every corner. They have a way of showing even the most mundane things in a magical light, and that always makes me realize there’s a bit of fairy tale in everyone’s life. I’ve long been a fan of your adult novels.
